It was the art dealer and enthusiast Ambroise Vollard who ensured a stable income for Chagall during the crisis years of the thirties. He commissioned him to make around one hundred etchings to illustrate Gogol's book Dead Souls. Next, Chagall made a hundred etchings for Vollard to illustrate La Fontaine's Fables. Finally, he made a hundred etchings for tales from the Old Testament. Chagall's etchings can be generally divided into the Vollard period, the period before it and the period after it until Chagall's death. We keep to this practical subdivision here. |
