From the moment Chagall felt at liberty to create colour lithographs, a split can be discerned in his lithographic works: lithographs that are purely the expression of his creative urge, and lithographs which besides that are meant to reach a large public.
The first group has editions of up to a hundred copies - this goes for half (537) of his eleven hundred lithographs.
The second group, with editions of over two thousand copies, comprises one sixth (185) of the total number of lithographs. Most of these were made in the period 1956-1960, and they often have a religion character. You can find these 185 lithographs in the category the large editions. Almost all of them are in the drawers at our gallery.
In the category favorite series, editions are usually around two hundred copies. Logically, the prices for these editions are considerably higher.
The category with Charles Sorlier contains a listing of most of the lithographs which Sorlier applied to the stone in his cooperation with Chagall. Most of them are in the drawers at the gallery. |
