Apart from etchings and lithographs, Chagall has made woodcuts and linocuts, albeit on a far more modest scale.

The finest series of woodcuts dates from 1968 and appeared in Chagall's book of poetry Poèmes. The series consists of 24 coloured woodcuts for which he used over 140 blocks of wood. They form one of the high points of his work. The Wuyt collection includes one such colour woodcut in all its stages, which required six blocks of wood.

Prior to this series, Chagall had worked only sporadically with this art printing technique. He began with a series of five single-block woodcuts in 1922/23, of which only a single print was made. This series was reissued in 1950.

Chagall's first linocut dates from 1939. One year before his death he made a series of six linocuts. He reverted to this form of artistic expression because of his advanced age.
